Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach
* 1656, † 1723
Thanks to his lengthy training in Rome, the architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach became one of the most influential figures on the architectural scene during the High Baroque in Central Europe. Formerly often stylized as a unique genius of the ‘Austrian heroic age’, today modern scholarship highlights above all his successful synthesis between Italian High Baroque and western European Baroque Classicism and his mediation of the architecture of Roman antiquity.
