The court painter Martin van Meytens

A native of Stockholm, the painter Martin van Meytens was much travelled and enjoyed international renown. He was Maria Theresa’s favourite painter and official portraitist of the imperial family. He also painted portraits of the nobility. Meytens had a highly specialized studio and owned a manufactory producing pigments and minerals used in painting. An imperial court painter from 1732, he was appointed rector of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1759.
