One name – eight museums The name Salzburg Museum covers not only one museum, but a total of eight institutions engaged in presenting the cultural heritage of the past and also the present of the city and Federal Land of Salzburg. Besides the Salzburg Museum in the Neue Residenz it runs the Panorama Museum with the world-famous cyclorama by Johann Michael Sattler, the Fortress Museum in the castle on the Hohensalzburg, the Toy Collection and Historic Musical Instruments in the Bürgerspital, the Cathedral Excavations Museum on Residenzplatz and the Folklore Museum in the Hellbrunn Monatsschlössl. Furthermore there is the public library – a reference library with around 130,000 bibliographical units. Salzburg Museum | Neue Residenz

Since summer 2007, the Salzburg Museum has taken the stage in the magnificent setting of the Neue Residenz - the "new residential palace" - on Mozartplatz, and with an entirely new concept. Precious artefacts, aesthetic presentation, an exciting conceptual approach and multimedia installations combine to make a harmonious and integrated whole. The Salzburg Museum is living proof that a modern museum can inform and yet at the same time entertain its visitors. It is therefore no wonder that the Salzburg Museum was awarded the 2007 Austrian Museum Prize and the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2009.

Salzburg Personalities
It was not only the rulers of their respective eras who shaped the life of urban and rural Salzburg. The exhibitions on the first floor present the life and work of interesting Salzburg men and women from the sectors of art, architecture, science, literature, music, photography, handicraft and the working world.

The Salzburg Myth
The permanent exhibition on the second floor of the Neue Residenz with its resplendent ceremonial rooms focuses on the development of Salzburg in history, art and culture since Early modern times. It ranges over the era of the absolutist rule of the archbishops, the painters of the Romantic era with their fascinating pictures of the Salzburg universal landscape, topics of contemporary interest and much more.

The treasure trove of archaeology and the Middle Ages
Treasures from the collections of archaeology and the Middle Agesare on show in the Mirror Hall on the 2nd floor, including the Celtic beaked jug, the Pass Lueg helmet and the Gothic winged altarpiece by the Master of the “Virgo inter Virgines”.

The Panorama Passage runs underground between the Salzburg Museum and the Panorama Museum. Here visitor can view archaeological finds from excavations in the Neue Residenz, among them a painted Roman wall. Moreover, city models, numerous decorative artefacts and historic data combine in a time trip through the development of Salzburg from Roman times to the present.

The Kunsthalle is located under the inner courtyard of the Neue Residenz – a multifunctional two-part hall sized around 500 m2 with an all-over light ceiling. Three major special exhibitions are held here every year.

Cathedral Excavations Museum / Residenzplatz

The Cathedral Excavations Museum under the Residenz and Domplatz in the area of the present cathedral provides a view into building activities since Roman times. Especially impressive are the archaeological excavation finds of a Roman villa; various walls, architectural parts, mosaics, drains and hot-air heating systems were brought to light.

Also on view are foundations and wall remnants of the west tower of the Romanesque cathedral built under Archbishop Konrad III in the late twelfth century; the cathedral was demolished after a fire (1598).

Fortress Museum | Hohensalzburg Castle

The exhibition in the historic rooms of the Hohensalzburg fortress’s Hoher Stock documents the history of the fortress and daily life in a castle. On show are Roman coins and ceramics and the remains of a Roman wall, a medieval heating system, and twelfth-century Romanesque arcades. The Fortress Museum also presents the things that are indispensible to a fortress: weapons and suits of armour, instruments of torture, and gold treasure. The completely equipped kitchen and historic military music instruments add to this picture of the past.

Historic Musical Instruments

The Salzburg Museum has the most impressive examples of its comprehensive historic musical instruments on show, along with the Toy Collection, in the Bürgerspital: four centuries of valuable keyboard, wind, string, plucked and percussion instruments. Audio samples set the instruments resounding once more, testifying to the high quality of the exhibits. CD recordings of historic instruments in the collection are available at the Museum Shop. Rounding off the options, the museum arranges regular guided tours, an exciting children’s programme and intimate concerts.

Panorama Museum | Residenzplatz

A wonderful view!

Step onto the visitors’ platform and marvel at at the huge cyclorama (26 m circumference) of the historic city of Salzburg and its environs. The unique city panorama by J.M. Sattler (1786-1847) is 130 m2 in size. Telescopes give you a close-up view of sightseeing sites and many details from the city’s daily life 200 years ago.

A specially developed interactive display shows you amazing comparisons between yesterday and today. Move the animated touch screens to access all the important information on the individual sightseeing sites and most striking  parts of the city of Salzburg.

In addition, the museum has so-called cosmoramas by Hubert Sattler on display,  a  much-travelled painter who produced these large-scale paintings to give us unusual views of nineteenth-century city- and landscapes.

Toy Museum | Bürgerspital

The Toy Museum holds the largest collection in Austria on the history of European toys. All types of toys are shown in a space of 800 square metres in the rooms of the historic Bürgerspital: doll’s houses and dolls, paper theatres, metal and wooden toys from all well-known producer regions, soft and furry toys, optical toys, tin figures, railway sets, and much more. Special exhibitions and events including workshops for children and families round off the experience – not forgetting the museum’s Punch and Judy Show.

Folklore Museum | Monatsschlössl Hellbrunn

The Hellbrunn Monatsschlössl –built in 1615 purportedly within the period of one month as a hunting lodge for Archbishop Markus Sittikus (1612–1619) – has since 1924 housed the folklore exhibitions of the Salzburg Museum. It offers a comprehensive view into traditional Salzburg folk culture, focusing on folk piety, folk painting on glass, furniture, ceramics and traditional dress, folk music and customs. Taking pride of place among the highlights of the Folklore Museum are the fine examples of traditional ornamental rustic furniture and historic masks. An annually changing special exhibition is held in the summer months.
