The painting depicts the moment at which Joseph II was crowned Roman-German king. Joseph was crowned in 1764 during the lifetime of his father, Emperor Franz I Stephan. The coronation is taking place at the centre of the picture; witnessing the scene in the foreground on the right is the ruling emperor in full regalia.
