The “removable” plant house
engraving after Salomon Kleiner, from: Wunder würdiges Kriegs- und Siegs-Lager […], 1731–1740
A sensation that astonished the whole of Europe was the hothouse with a folding-back roof and a removable front in summer. The citron tree planted in the earth could therefore thrive in the open air in the warm season and was still protected in winter – without having to be moved. Together with the building’s rich figural adornments and the water basin, the arrangement presented a stylised island of eternal spring – a real Paradise Garden!
