The remodelling of the abbey complex at Melk was the life work of Abbot Dietmayr. Dietmayr was an influential personality and enjoyed the confidence of Emperor Charles VI. Among other positions he held the office of rector of Vienna University, and was a senior member of the Lower Austrian prelature.
