In 1603 Hans von Aachen travelled to Italy at the behest of the emperor. He had been tasked with portraying potential wives for the emperor at various courts. On his way back he stopped at Innsbruck, where he painted Archduchess Anna, the daughter of Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol.
