Gustav Klimt: The theatre at Taormina, 1886–1888, main ceiling panel in the north staircase of the Vienna Burgtheater

Emperor Franz Joseph was so pleased with the paintings that he awarded the young artists the Gold Cross of Merit. This success led to the three artists being entrusted with another major commission, that of executing the spandrel paintings in the staircase of the new Court Museum of Art History.
