Georg Matthäus Vischer: The imperial palace courtyard at Vienna, copperplate engraving from: *Topographia archiducatus Austr
The picture shows an idealized view of the inner palace courtyard: on the left is the Schweizerhof (‘Swiss Court’), the original fortified medieval complex with its corner towers, in the middle the sober façade of the Leopoldine Wing, while on the right is the late Renaissance building commissioned by Emperor Matthias today known as the Amalienburg (‘Amalia Residence’).
