“Eugenius Franciscus Princeps Sabaudiae”
engraving, J. G. Wolfgang, from: Theatrum Europaeum, 1718
Prince Eugene was positioned for thirty-three years at the top of army command. Eugene was a shrewd tactician and strategist but not an expert administrator. The cumbersome administrative apparatus of the Army did not need devil-may-care coups de main, but an understanding of bureaucratic structures, also patience – not Eugene’s strong points.
