Chapel of St George in the Augustinian monastery
A number of important personalities connected with the Habsburg Court are interred in the Chapel of St George, including Gerard van Swieten, Maria Theresa’s personal physician and the founder of the Viennese medical school. The chapel is dominated by the cenotaph of Emperor Leopold II: originally inended for the Kapuzinergruft, this monumental tomb was never erected there; the monarch rests in a simple sarcophagus in the imperial crypt.
