Arial view of the overall ensemble of the Belvedere
engraving after Salomon Kleiner, from: Wunder würdiges Kriegs- und Siegs-Lager […], 1731–1740
This aerial view onto the overall ensemble of the Belvedere offers a detailed perspective onto the two palaces and the garden between them. It imparts an impression of the dimensions of this complex – and we sense the impact this imposing palatial ensemble must have had on the contemporary public.
To realise this Gesamtkunstwerk, a synthesis of the arts, more than 1300 artisans and artists were commissioned, first and foremost the architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt ((1668–1745), also the garden architect and engineer Dominique Girard (1680–1738).
