The Marriage of Figaro
1768
The premiere of the Marriage of Figaro on 1 May 1786 at the Court Theatre in Vienna was not a success – there had been insufficient time for rehearsals, and the orchestra found the music difficult to play. Mozart had only finished the overture two days before the first performance, and the musicians had to play from handwritten scores, which led to them making a large number of mistakes. Audiences were divided, and the opera was soon taken off the programme. In Prague it was a huge success.
