A family of beggars – Guarantors of the salvation of the soul

1648

Paupers and beggars generally lived near to the city walls or led a nomadic life in their search for work, food and lodging. There were also both religious and private institutions that took care of their welfare. The majority of the population had an ambivalent attitude towards paupers and beggars: on the one hand they were ostracized and driven away, while on the other hand they fulfilled an important role, as wealthy people could give them alms, a good deed that helped towards the salvation of their own souls.
