Austrian archducal coronet
1359–1918
The Austrian archducal coronet is both the ‘crown’ of the Habsburg patrimonial lands (Upper and Lower Austria in the narrower sense) and at the same time the symbol of the title of archduke or archduchess of Austria. This title, which was intended to underscore the special rank of the Habsburgs among the princes of the Empire, was hereditary in the House of Habsburg and the most important part of the titles of all legitimate members of the dynasty.
Several examples of this coronet were made. Of those that have been preserved, one is kept at the abbey in Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria, while another is held in Mariastein, a Tyrolean site of pilgrimage.
