World War I, 1914–1918
28. Jul 1914–12. Nov 1918
The assassination of the heir to the Austrian throne at Sarajevo brought the long-standing political tensions to the point of explosion. The Central Powers (Austria-Hungary and Germany) fought against the Entente powers of France, Great Britain and Russia, and also against Serbia, Italy and the USA. The theatre of war included Africa, the Arabian peninsula, Asia Minor and the world’s oceans. Austria’s defeat in the world war led directly to the dissolution of the Habsburg Monarchy.
